The Additional Dwelling Unit (ADU)

This ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) was a passion project in every way; fun to design and a bonus to the already existing home. ADUs are becoming more popular and we love the idea of utilizing every space to its max, and making the most of what we have. The best part was the simplicity of this project at the end of the day. It made us believe even more in the idea of making ADUs a bigger part of the real estate and rental landscape.

The Garage

As I said, this was a piece of another property: the garage. But we didn’t need it so we tore it down. The structure was not going to cut it for the end product, but we knew the area it occupied was ideal.

We pulled up the old concrete slab patio and driveway and built a completely new structure as an addition to the house. Though it’s close, it has a separate entrance and address so that exclusive feeling and independence is still felt.

The ADU

From the black and white tiles of the kitchen to the orange hues in the living room, we had so much fun designing this quaint addition to one of our favorite LA homes.

Now, the homeowners use it for an office and guest house. And that’s the real charm of an ADU; they are versatile and comfortable dwellings that can foster independence for a child, be an escape, or a place to get creative.

For the overall design aesthetic we went with a chic, modern vibe that included luxurious and natural textiles, funky geometric accents, and a neutral, but warm color palette.

And, of course, we had to play with some tile designs. This is seen in both the kitchen and the bathroom where we also brought in some gold finishes and stone to pull the whole home together into a cohesive retreat.

PUNIAF.design at Home

All of our projects hold special places in our hearts and portfolios, but this was a different challenge that we loved taking on. For us, your building plans, design dreams, and outside the box desires for that bit of extra space become a reality through what we do at PUNIAF.design.

We take pride in our ability to take your suggestions and preferences and bring it to life. For this project, the homeowners literally only had to confirm a few design decisions, otherwise they didn't even peek in, so we were able to get that big reveal moment.
