You are not alone.

The recent wildfires have been devastating for our Los Angeles community and we’ve never loved our city more than now. Like many of you, we at PUNIAF.design are heartbroken by the loss and displacement experienced by so many families.

If you are on this page, you might be one of them so please know we feel you and are virtually hugging you with all our hearts.

The solidarity and believe in the resilience of our community is STRONG. While we can't help everyone, we want to do what we can and offer our assistance and share resources to help those who have lost their homes, are temporarely misplaced and are facing the daunting task of renovation or reconstruction. There is a lot of information out there, as well as rumors, speculations, opinions and advice... it surely is too much to sift through, and you may end up going in circles. So below we gathered the few most important links for you to visit and save, as well as summaries of the main topics.

Firstly, to help navigate the insurance claims, here is a link to a presentation distributed on 1/23 by LAUSD: How to Navigate Fire Insurance Claims

I also would love to share a special blog article I put together on

Coping Strategies After Wildfires and Creating a Healing Space at Home >>

When you start wrapping your head around the rebuilding process, the attached below summary of the new building permit regulations relevant to fire-affected areas, and the full article, would be something to read. These will continue being updated so it’s important to save the links to the source.

Additionally, we're offering a complimentary one-hour phone or zoom design consultation to anyone affected by the fires. Details and schedule button below.

If you’re too overwhelmed to chat, but it would be nice to run your dilemma or silly question (no such thing!) by another brain, we're also launching an "Ask Us Anything" initiative to support you in another way. Check it out below and use it!

We understand that this is a long road to recovery, and we're here for you every step of the way.

With heartfelt support,

Paulina & the PUNIAF.design Team

City of LA wants to help you rebuild fast

Here's a short summary of what they're doing to help:

  • Faster Permits:  You can get your building permits within 30 days if you apply to rebuild a home similar to what you had before the fire. Inspections will happen within 2 days of your request.

  • Less Bureaucracy:  A lot of the usual rules and reviews are waived for rebuilding projects. This means less waiting and a simpler process.

  • One-Stop Shop: They're setting up a special center in the fire zone with all the city departments you'll need to work with in one place. This will save you time and effort running around to different offices.

  • Help with Debris:  The city is creating a task force to clean up fire debris quickly and safely.

  • Temporary Housing: You can live in an RV, tiny home, or mobile home on your property while you rebuild for up to 3 years.

Important things to keep in mind:

  • Rebuild Similar: To qualify for the faster process, your new home generally needs to be similar in size and use to your old one. You can rebuild slightly larger (up to 110%), and even bigger if it fits current zoning rules.

  • Deadlines: You'll need to get your building permits within 7 years and finish construction within 3 years of getting the permit.

  • Historic Homes: If your home was designated as a historic property, there will be special rules to follow. The city will provide more information on this soon.

Where to get more information:

  • City Departments: The Department of Building and Safety and the Department of City Planning will provide detailed guidelines on the rebuilding process within 30 days.

  • Disaster Recovery Permitting Center: This center will be set up in the fire zone and will have representatives from all the relevant city departments.
