The Additional Dwelling Unit (ADU)
This ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) was a passion project in every way; fun to design for one of our favorite West Adams clients, and a bonus to the already existing home. ADUs are pretty popular and a big part of the real estate and rental landscape in Los Angeles, and we do love the idea of utilizing every space to its max, and making the most of what we have.
These homeowners use it for an office and guest house. And that’s the real charm of an ADU; they are versatile and comfortable dwellings that can foster independence for a child, be an escape, or a place to get creative.

The garage had to go
This property desperately needed an overhaul. The corner lot, with nothing but dirt and thorny plants in the front, and a tiny useless garage, taking a precious backyard area, offered the growing family no space for the kids or the dog to play, and no privacy anywhere around the home.
We transformed this underutilized lot into a gorgeous escape, not only creating a proper private front yard with fencing and hedges (see that part HERE >>) but also building an entire ADU and creating a spacious backyard!
The garage had to be torn down, we pulled up the old concrete slab patio and driveway and built a completely new structure as an addition to the house. Though it’s attached, it has a separate entrance and address so that exclusive feeling and independence is still felt.
This is now a high-end property with new stucco, driveway, designer finishes and a fantastic secluded front and back yard space for the kiddos to roam around in.
The ADUs don't just come together..
From the black and white tiles of the kitchen to the orange hues in the living room, we had so much fun designing this quaint high-end addition.
For the overall design aesthetic we went with a chic, modern vibe that included luxurious and natural textiles, funky geometric accents, and a neutral, but warm color palette.
And, of course, we had to play with some tile designs. This is seen in both the kitchen and the bathroom where we also brought in some gold finishes and stone to pull the whole home together into a cohesive retreat.
PUNIAF.design at Home
All of our projects hold special places in our hearts and portfolios, but this was a different challenge that we loved taking on. For us, your building plans, design dreams, and outside the box desires for that bit of extra space become a reality through what we do at PUNIAF.design.
We take pride in our ability to take your suggestions and preferences and bring it to life. For this project, the homeowners literally only had to confirm a few design decisions, otherwise they didn't even peek in, so we were able to get that big reveal moment.
If you're interested in getting what they have ;), let's connect and brainstorm how we can make it happen for you.
